Oi implements optical backbone in Mato Grosso with Padtec technology

Oi, a Brazilian operator of telecommunications services, expanded in 2015, its fiber optic network in 570 kilometers in the State of Mato Grosso, creating a network of 2,600 kilometers with national DWDM technology, in partnership with the Brazilian company Padtec. With the technology, the company significantly increased the traffic carrying capacity for the region, benefiting 39 cities in this state. Based on optical ring with Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology, the network supports, of protected form, a 100 Gbit/s capacity and includes advanced technologies of optical amplification, allowing the connection between cities separated by very long distances.

Over the last few years, the Brazilian operator Oi has prioritized investments in their networks to improve the quality of services offered to customers in all regions in the country. The optical backbone of high-capacity illuminates a stretch that connects the capital Cuiabá to northern state region, where some cities were attended by radio connections and now have available fiber solutions.

The new DWDM network employs latest generation transponders with Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer (ROADMs) technology, that enable high availability, the services scalability and easy management and provisioning , ensuring high performance to meet the growing data consumption in the coming years.  “The Mato Grosso optical ring provide the cities served a high-speed network, greater resilience, with a breakthrough in data transmission and voice services in the region”, says Luiz Augusto Pereira Lopes, Oi’s Director of Planning and Network Projects.

The project’s highlight is the link between the cities Brasnorte and Sapezal, in northern state of Mato Grosso, with total distance of 240 kilometers. This link, dimensioned to support speeds of 100 Gbit/s, its equipped with Remote Optical Pump Amplifier (ROPA), designed to operate in ultra-long-distance stretch in which the construction of intermediate regeneration stations is not possible. The innovative solution offered by Padtec contributes to reducing costs of stations implementation and maintenance in the Oi’s optical system of long-distance.

Another major challenge, because of difficulties in accessing and stream of the Juruena river, was to build an underwater optical cable (under the riverbed), with a length of 1,300 meters, linking the cities of Nova Monte Verde and Juruena to Mato Grosso’s north.
