Padtec reaches the mark of 6 thousand kilometers of optical networks deployed for Silica Networks in South America

From North of Chile to South of Argentina, the networks provided by Padtec cross distinct and challenging geographies. – such as Atacama, Patagonian and Andes – enabling 100 Gbps data traffic for the Carrier of Carriers of the region.

Silica Networks, a company which provides infrastructure, maintenance and optical transport services, is investing over the last decade in Padtec optical solutions for enlightening its optical networks in Argentina and Chile.

The first Project deployed for the provider was concluded in 2009, linking Buenos Aires (in Argentina) and Osorno (in Chile) cities in a total of 2.000 kilometers. The network, which interconnect important cities of the region, crosses the great Andes mountain range, facing challenging geographies such as the rote between Bahía Blanca e Neuquén cities, which reaches below zero temperatures during the winter and extremely high temperatures during the summer.

The long date partnership with Silica represents the consolidation of Padtec presence in the international market, becoming the outcome of the internationalization strategy adopted by the company in the last decade and which culminates in direct operation in the Latin American Market”, says Pablo Prieto, General Manager of Padtec’s office in Argentina.

Other optical solution provided by Padtec to Silica for connecting Buenos Aires and Santiago, Chile’s capital, allowed an even greater traffic volume for the advanced telecommunication networks of RedClara – Latin American Cooperation for Advanced networks, which interconnect corporative customers, academic institutions and universities in Latin America. This span, which takes advantage of a gas pipeline subterranean cables infrastructure, enables high reliability levels to the route.

“For Padtec, it is a great satisfaction to be part in these projects and to provide equipment and Brazilian technology to networks focused on research and development in science and technology fields. The networks Padtec deployed to Silica connect several Latin American academic institutions worldwide”, highlights Pablo.

Among the relevant initiatives, which Padtec participates by means of Silica’s networks, are the Pierre Auger observatory, an international facility focused on astronomic observation and ALMA Project, the biggest astronomic program in the world, located in the Atacama Desert in Chile, at altitude of more than 5 thousand metros. The projects, driven by international scientific communities, are pioneers in their research areas.

Horácio Martinez, president of Silica Networks, speaks with enthusiasm about the possibility of hosting datacenters in the cold regions of Patagonian. “As well as the north hemisphere datacenters hosted in countries such as Sweden and Finland, we believe that Patagonian, with its extremely cold weather and plenty of renewable energy sources, is ideal for storing huge amounts of data for long periods”, assets him. “Beyond that, transmitting data throughout optical fibers consumes less than 10% of electricity, becoming more profitable for north to south data traffic. In this sense, we believe that Padtec’s solutions provide great resources to turn our networks more competitive, modern and ready for future demands, in addition to help protection the environment.

The Carrier of Carriers, which operates an extensive optical fiber network, is currently investing in upgrades to 100 Gpbs transmission rates in order to add capacity to its backbones which widely covers Argentinian and Chilean territories. Recent upgrades in the Silica routes count on last generation transponders, protection mechanisms and margin for future expansions by means of new channel additions.

Over the course of this partnership, Padtec has deployed more than 6 thousand kilometers of DWDM networks for Silica Networks aiming wide offering of services and business expansion. In addition, new links are being planned and should be deployed with Padtec equipment in the coming mouths, enhancing even more the provider’s high capacity footprint.
