Sumicity invests in new generation of 200 Gb/s Padtec transponders to illuminate routes in southeastern Brazil

New DWDM systems from the Brazilian operator – with transmission rates of 100 and 200 Gb/s – will be illuminated in the first half of the year, ensuring thousands of high capacity connections in the region.

Sumicity, a Brazilian provider of telecommunications services, is investing in increasing the transmission capacity of its Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical networks in the southeast of Brazil. With the acquisition of Padtec’s new 100 Gb/s dual transponders, the Brazilian operator plans to expand the capacity of existing networks or build new stretches, reaching a total of approximately 3,500 kilometers of DWDM networks in the Brazilian Southeast region.

Just in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Sumicity has already illuminated more than 2,000 kilometers of optical networks. Fábio Abreu, Sumicity’s CEO, highlights the first high capacity DWDM network in the interior of Rio de Janeiro built by the operator last year. “There were more than 200 kilometers of illuminated optical networks to connect the interior to the capital of Rio de Janeiro, with transmission rates of 100 Gb/s”, says Fábio Abreu. “One of the reasons we are investing in the expansion of our backbone is so that we can take Sumicity Play, our IPTV HD (fiber optic TV), to all the cities included in our expansion project, as well as the 27 cities where Sumicity Play is already present. Today, we can prove that this network infrastructure contributes not only to significantly improve the connectivity offered to the population, but also to reach several publics with the purpose of boosting the economic and technological development of the region”, adds Abreu.

In line with international technology trends in this area, Padtec’s new line of 100 and 200 Gb/s (per optical channel) transponders from Padtec’s LightPad i6400G platform combines high data rates with lower space occupancy and consumption per transmitted bit. “One of the technical innovations of this generation of transponders lies in the more flexible network interfaces that allow better adaptation of the optical channels to the demands of performance and expansion of the network”, says Argemiro Sousa, Padtec’s Business Director.

To monitor and manage data traffic on the new routes in real time, Sumicity will feature the modern management platform recently launched by Padtec. “Based on modern software architecture standards, Padtec’s new DWDM network management platform has full web access and offers the operator a unique usability experience through advanced route management and control features”, says Roberto Nakamura, Padtec’s Technology Director. “One of the highlights of the new version of this platform is the ability to manage Padtec products from different technology generations – including the modern 100 Gb/s dual transponders provided to Sumicity”, adds Nakamura.
